Writ
Description
A writ is a document that requires someone to perform or cease performing a deed. While modern-day writs are issued by judicial systems, during the Middle Ages the reigning monarch performed this task. British historian Richard Sharpe describes this relationship as an established communication between the crown and the outlying shires. Studies conducted concerning medieval writs focus on this royal command. Following the Norman Conquest, writs were only written in Latin and focused more on royal decrees than on land grants.
