Letter
Description
A letter in the Middle Ages was much the same as a modern letter; sent from one party to another, a letter can contain any variety of information. As they are not legal documents, a letter must only have a sender and recipient, though these may not be named. Because the vast majority of documents relevant to the Atlas of a Medieval Life project have been preserved by official church or government institutions, letters sent in official capacities are more likely to have been preserved than those between private citizens.
