Title
Indulgence
Description
An indulgence is a document issued by the Catholic Church guaranteeing the full or partial remission of punishment for sin. Indulgences were purchased from the Church, but did not have to be purchased for a specific person. Some indulgences in the Atlas of a Medieval Life project grant remission of sins for anyone who donated money or goods to a particular ecclesiastical cause, such as the building of a church or shrine.
