Title
Commission
Description
A commission in the Middle Ages referred to an office an individual could hold. Much like institutions, commissions were assigned to their holders. While in the modern day, commission documents often refer to jobs which pay “on commission,” or per amount of sales made rather than per hour worked, in the Middle Ages the commission referred to the job itself, not its method of pay. These documents name the individual being assigned a commission, the individual doing the assigning, as well as the nature of the job and its compensation.
