Description
The Register of Thomas de Charlton, Bishop of Hereford, contains the records of Charlton’s decrees and clerical work as the Bishop of Hereford, including mandates, appointments, licensing, and marital unions, alongside Ordination Lists. The documents date from 1327-1344. The original documents were part of a composite register that contained multiple bishop’s registers, including those of Courtenay, Polton, Spofford, and Beauchamp. Charlton’s register is recorded on parchment paper and covered with leather-covered wooden boards; it is collected in folios. There is no mention of whether it is bound, but it is referred to as a “volume.” The volume is held by the Hereford Diocesan Registry at their physical location, and has not been digitized.
A transcription of the register, edited by William W. Cape, was published in 1912 by Wilson and Phillips, printers in Hereford. This edition contains Latin transcriptions and added English headings, as well as a biography of Charlton. The Appendices are a separate section from the records, but the folio numbers to the side indicate that the appendices might originally have been interspersed with the records. The Ordination Lists were transcribed by Reverend R.G. Griffiths for Cape’s compilation. This version of the Register is available both digitally, via digital libraries such as HathiTrust, and physically, via university libraries and retailers. It is within the public domain in the United States.
