Description
A foot of fine (plural feet of fines) is an archival copy of the result of a lawsuit over land. England produced feet of fines from 1195-1833, and holds all documents at the National Archives in Kew, London. medievalgenealogy.co.uk contains a searchable database of published feet of fines, sorted by county. The website contains, for each foot of fine, a summary of the document in English and a link to an image of the original document. These summaries contain place names (county and place), parties, a description of the property in question, an action, agreement, warranty, and description of a monetary transaction. The feet of fines provide detailed knowledge of land holdings and sales, involving both lay and clerical Englishmen, throughout the country, and can be used to trace the movements and possessions of individuals and families across generations.
