Description
The Calendar of Papal Registers Relating to Great Britain and Ireland, Vols 2 and 3, cover the periods from 1305-1342 and 1343-1356, respectively. The volumes are organized into “regesta,” or registers, which cover the documents of one calendar year. The documents contained in each are letters written in the Pope’s official capacity, meaning that all letters concern appointments/offices, mandates, dispensations, and other official functions of the Vatican with respect to British or Irish parishes. Responses sent from these parishes to the Pope are not included. The original Latin documents are held by the Vatican Library and have not been digitized. In 1895 (Vol. 2) and 1897 (Vol. 3), William Henry Bliss published translations of the documents into English. Bliss’s volumes are digitally available via British History Online.
