Description
The Calendar of Papal Petitions, 1342-1419, is a collection of 1410 documents organized in 99 volumes and categorized according to the presiding pope. All are petitions to the Pope, specifically those relating to Britain and Ireland from 1342 to 1419. The underlying medieval documents are bound and organized in more than 8,600 volumes in total, with those dating from 1342-1419 comprising a small section of the overall collection of papal petitions held by the Archivio Segreto of the Vatican, transferred from the Dataria Apostolica. The earlier volumes are in large folio, about 16½″ × 12¾″, but some of those of later date are a little smaller.
The modern resource for the Calendar of Papal Petitions (CPP) is a website created by British History Online. It is alternatively titled Petitions to the Pope 1342-1419, and is an online version of the collection originally published in 1896 digitized through double re-keying. The Calendar falls under free use laws as part of the organization’s public library records.
